The next few days passed in a dizzying flurry of pleasure and frustration. LeAuntiez spent his mornings in futile and exasperating pursuit of Zapt. The former minister was like smoke. No sooner would LeAuntiez, or one of his Brokvata, catch a glimpse of the illusive Zapt than he would disappear on the wind. LeAuntiez was starting to think Zapt had left the star system and his followers were leaving false trails to keep the Brokvata occupied.

Worse than his failure to find Zapt was his inability to locate Erin. Kyla had stopped asking if he’d heard anything new. She must figure if he had news he would tell her, but the disappointment and fear in her beautiful green eyes tore at his heart.

He strode through the corridor of Protectorate Headquarters, desperately needing the calming council of his podmate. It was near enough to dark that he should be able to convince Bron to abandon his responsibilities for the rest of the night so they could focus on courting Kyla.

Just the thought of Kyla sent desire sizzling through LeAuntiez’s system. Each time he joined with her, the need to claim her was stronger. He no longer sensed any fear from her, but uncertainty still rippled from time to time. He sighed. They were expecting a lot from her. Their concepts of courtship were very different from hers.

He rounded a corner and headed toward Bron’s office.

“What the fuck is wrong with you!” Bron’s angry voice echoed down the hall. “There are seven security checkpoints between the shuttle bay and the hold. How did a thief bypass all that security?”

A moment of silence followed then a ceramic mug flew through the doorway and smashed against the wall on the far side of the corridor.

LeAuntiez jogged the last few paces, curious and concerned about Bron’s uncharacteristic behavior. Everyone knew Bron had a hot temper, but he had to be extremely upset to throw things.

Cautiously peeking around the corner, LeAuntiez made sure he wasn’t going to be pelted by flying objects before he entered the office.

Bron had just terminated the com-link. He stood and slammed his chair into his desk. “Fucking rebels! Are they acting on their own or is Zapt commanding them from the shadows?” He shoved his fingers through his hair, causing the wavy mass to curl off in all directions. “Please tell me Zapt is now locked in detention.”

“He’s a ghost,” LeAuntiez grumbled. “I honestly think he’s long gone and we’re chasing shadows.”

Rather than indulging in another fit of temper, Bron gazed into the distance thoughtfully. “Then who is commanding the rebels? These attacks are well-organized and structured. There’s no way they are spontaneous.”

LeAuntiez leaned his shoulder against the doorframe and crossed his arms over his chest. “Who’d they hit today, and what did they steal?”

“They hit the Elizian.”

LeAuntiez grimaced. The Elizian was Bron’s ship, the Protectorate flagship. Though Bron’s first officer was currently in command, Bron still thought of the ship as his. “Damn,” was all LeAuntiez said.

“They got away with an entire case of anterite.
